The chink of poker chips now is accompanying the clink of teacups at the elegant Greenbrier Casino Resort. West Virginia officials cleared the historic White Sulphur Springs resort to begin offering gaming Thursday. Its new owner OK’d the eight blackjack tables, one three-card poker table, a roulette wheel and 40 slot machines due later this month.

Gambling is tucked away in the former Tavern Room area, says Greenbrier PR director Lynn Swann. “It’s discreetly located,” she says, so as not to annoy guests who might disapprove.
“This is just another amenity,” she says, like golf or a spa.
The Greenbrier isn’t trying to take on Vegas. Gaming is only only for guests, club members and certain convention attendees who are staying elsewhere.
The resort has a new Tavern Casino Package for those wanting to try their luck. Rates start at $419, single, and $449 double, and include lodging, $150 in match play coupons, breakfast for two and all taxes, gratuities and resort fees.
A bigger Greenbrier casino, with nearly 40 games including popular Texas Hold ‘Em, plus 320 slots, is due in April.
